MEET EZ.RC : TOM
Next up on our Meet EZ Series is Tom. This guy loves a challenge, whether it’s running around in circles on track or tackling mountains that make most of us want to lie down. He does it all with a smile on his face and barely a bead of sweat in sight. One of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, Tom’s the kind of runner you want in your corner cheering you on. He might have turned up just to run, but what he found was a community he never expected, and he’s been all in ever since.
How has your relationship with running changed over time?
I used to think going out for a run would only be done as part of a training plan. Now it's so much more than that, there's no better way to switch the mind off and clear your head.
What drew you to EZ.RC, and what keeps you coming back?
I joined EZ to get a break from my wife and now she’s more involved than I am! No, I’m joking, I joined to improve my running but the friendships I've built since, are something I really wasn’t expecting. The community is hard to put into words, and seeing it continue to grow and get stronger is something very special.
How has being part of the club impacted your running?
Wednesday’s track sessions have been a real game changer for my speed and technique. I love the process, when you see results it just makes you want to push that little bit more. Then the community and friendships has been a surprising impact. Everyone is so supportive and welcoming, nobody gets left behind.
What’s your “why” for running?
I enjoy a mental challenge just as much as the physical, so I like to do something new each year to remind myself what I’m capable of. This year was a 50 mile ultra marathon through the black mountains. It was as much mindset as endurance, but it’s just one foot in front of the other at the end of the day.
What do you tell yourself when a run feels tough?
If it were easy, it wouldn’t be worth it.
I really believe that we’re built to do hard things and I’m grateful for the ability to keep pushing, no matter my age. I want to be that 80 yr old flying past the youngsters on the hills.
What’s a running goal that excites you right now?
I'd like to get sub 1hr 30min in the Cardiff half.
What’s the best piece of running advice you’ve ever received?
"When your legs get tired, run with your heart"
If you could go back and give your beginner-runner self some advice, what would it be?
Just get out and run, one foot in front of the other, and enjoy it.
If you could run anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I'd love to do an ultra in the Alps.
Describe your perfect post-run meal or ritual?
Pint of cider and a burger.
