MEET EZ.RC : KATE

Series 2 continues with another brilliant Kate. With her iconic pink vest and a smile that never quits, Kate brings a refreshingly grounded perspective to her running journey. So we sat down with her to chat about all things running, community, and what keeps her coming back.

What is your ‘why’ for running ?

I’m just very thankful to have a body that is healthy and able enough to run and I always try to make an effort not to take that for granted. It’s a blessing to have a healthy body and healthy heart and I think it’s important we do what’s in our control in order to maintain that for as long as possible. It also keeps my mind healthy which is an added bonus.

What drew you to EZ.RC and what keeps you coming back?

The community. There are no egos. There’s no competitiveness. We’re all competing but only ever against ourselves. Some of the achievements I’ve made are absolutely minuscule compared to others but they are celebrated with the same enthusiasm. I’m inspired by everyone constantly and it only makes me want to achieve more.

How has being part of the club impacted your running?

It’s impacted my life massively. I was getting really bored of training in the same way day in day out and in the beginning it was just a change from being in the gym. What I didn’t expect was the quantity and the quality of relationships that I would form. In a very short space of time I’ve made friends for life who have gone out of their way to support me, and I do the same for them. They’re not even just friends - they’re family now.

What’s a running goal that excites (or scares) you right now?

I’m running my first marathon next year. I’ve not even run a half yet. Every time I remind myself of that my stomach drops but if I say I’m doing something, I’m doing it!

What do you tell yourself when a run feels tough?

It’s a privilege to run. It’s a privilege to be alive. Don’t take a second of it for granted.

If you could go back and give your beginner-runner self some advice, what would it be?

Consistency is key. I honestly believed it would never get easier at one point, but I kept turning up twice a week and when I look back at the pace / distance I could achieve then compared to now - I’ve progressed a LOT! Also, never compare yourself to anyone. Encourage everyone, let them inspire you, but don’t ever compete with them - only compete with yourself.

What’s a non-running habit or mindset that’s made you a better runner?

One of my favourite parts of track on a Wednesday is encouraging everyone else as they come through. Wanting everyone else to be better makes me a better runner because it opens my eyes to what it’s possible to achieve.

Describe your perfect post-run meal or ritual?

I love EZ Sunday morning runs because they’re usually followed by lots of coffee shop-hopping, a brunch somewhere and a walk along the beach with the dog. Perfect post-run ritual.
