MEET EZ.RC : OLLY
Next up on our Meet EZ series is our resident DJ, Olly.
How has your relationship with running changed over time?
I started running initially to lose weight and get fit. I didn’t see much progress as I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. I’d go out and run 5k as fast as I could, every time, and I ended up getting injured. Over time I’ve learnt how to do it properly. And being part of EZ has only enhanced that, especially the track sessions. I now run for the pure enjoyment, to explore new places, and for the people and friends you meet along the way. It’s my meditation. The rest takes care of itself. I now run because I can, and will continue until I can’t. Even then I’ll probably still try, it’s that good.
What drew you to EZ.RC, and what keeps you coming back?
I was looking for something to join, to be part of, EZ looked like a welcoming, and cool (crucial), club that didn’t take itself too seriously. First and foremost it’s the culture that’s been created that keeps me coming back. It’s so supportive and full of great people (many of which are now friends) that get you through the track sessions and gets you up on a Sunday morning. I couldn’t think of anything worse than running on my own now! It’s a pretty special place.
“It’s always a great vibe. It’s become much more than a running club to me. ”
Can you describe a moment at EZ.RC that really stuck with you?
My very first track session, I could hardly sleep that night I was buzzing my tits off. I was sold. I was in. Close second is those bloody hills….
How has being part of the club impacted your running or even your life?
Being part of EZ has had a huge impact on my running and my life, it’s given me a purpose and reason to run, and to continue running. My week now revolves around track on a Wednesday, it’s the favourite part. Whilst I joined to improve my running and to keep pushing myself, it’s the shared suffering and community that’s now the main reason. The improvement in my running has become a by-product.
What’s the best piece of running advice you’ve ever received?
I love a quote, and I heard one recently, ‘enjoy being in the process of becoming’. And that’s the beauty of running, I’m always looking to grow and push myself, but there’s always more to achieve, so just enjoy the journey.
What do you tell yourself when a run feels tough?
When you think you’re done, you’re only at 40% of what your bodies capable of (cheers Goggins). It’s just one foot in front of the other. It’s that simple.
Why did you decide to get a running Coach?
I’d seen the results others have had since starting with him and thought I want a bit of that. I’ve got a big year this year including an ultra, 2 HMs and a couple of 10ks, so thought I’d take it seriously and have a really good go at bringing my times down to see what I’m actually capable of. I want to round it all off with a marathon early next year (then retire as a professional athlete).
How has your running changed since being coached by Tommy?
I never had myself down as running 6 days a week clocking up 70/80k (and actually enjoy it). Tommys coaching and strength plan has slowly built me up to this and I’m now comfortably ticking over the kms, and I’ve never felt stronger as a runner. He’s been there and done it, so I completely trust in his process. It’s mental now I consider a 50k week as a light week.
If you could go for a run anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Other than anywhere along the Welsh coastline, it would have to be on a summer trail run in the French / Swiss Alps.
Describe your perfect post-run meal or ritual.
It’s a coffee and a pastry, surely?
