EZ.RC // Puresport: Sunday Long Run
Fuel is everything when it comes to running performance.
In short, your body burns through limited carbohydrate stores faster than you think, which is why energy gels become essential once you’re running beyond an hour.
Our hydration partners Puresport have teamed up with Performance Nutritionist, Dr Sam Impey to create their brand new energy gels, simplifying the science and breaking down the jargon, to give you clear facts that matter.
What better way to test them out than on the EZ.RC Sunday Long Run. A 8,16 or 24km lap of a beautiful sunny Cardiff Bay.
Powered by Puresport
Runners gathered bright and early at Full Fat Social in Cardiff Bay where we were treated to hydration tanks of electolytes, energy gel tasters and expert fuelling tips from the Puresport team. It was the perfect opportunity to try something new, understand fuelling strategies, and learn how to boost our endurance properly.
What did we learn;
Carbohydrate stores are typically only enough to sustain moderate-to-hard running for about 90 minutes. After around 60 minutes, fatigue sets in. That’s where gels come in. By consuming carbs during exercise you can to top up energy levels and avoid “hitting the wall.”
Optimal fuelling is 30g of carbs every 30 minutes For most runners, this steady intake rate hits the sweet spot and is enough energy to maintain performance, without overwhelming the digestive system. Which we all know can end badly.
Train your gut, not just your legs Let’s be honest, we’ve all been halfway into a run and start to question our life choices and rerouting to the nearest bathroom. Making fuelling part of your regular training ensures your body learns to digest and use carbohydrates efficiently and reduces the risk of gut issues on race day.
They taste incredible!
